Southern Brazil Flooding Mission SONEPAR

SONEPAR with EDS Brazil

SONEPAR and EDS Brazil honding hands for Southern Brazillian people.

Even though the heart of EDS is in the North of Brazil, it’s impossible to remain indifferent to what happens in the South.

In yet another Emergency Humanitarian Mission, we mobilized to support the health crisis that arises as a result of the floods in the southern region.

To enable a thorough study of the real post-flood situation, EDS sent its medical and logistics team on a precursor trip to the municipality of Canoas (RS) in May. From there, they traveled through various cities affected by the catastrophe, including the Taquari Valley, spoke with municipal and state leaders, and with important articulators from the private sector and the third sector who had already been working there for several days.

Beyond the technical visit, the EDS team, in conjunction with the NGO SAS Brazil, also visited dozens of shelters, conducted 161 consultations in clinical medicine and infectology, 624 ophthalmological consultations, and manufactured and donated 542 prescription glasses, through a partnership with the NGO Renovatio.

ACTION PLAN

  1. DECENTRALIZATION OF BASIC CARE - July to September/2024 Decentralized care to shelters, camps, and other conglomerates through mobile clinics with multidisciplinary teams, in addition to specialized supplies and equipment, with a close eye on chronic patients and pregnant women. Action possibly in conjunction with the NGOs SAS Brazil and Instituto Dharma.

1.2. MANUFACTURE AND DONATION OF PRESCRIPTION GLASSES - May to September/2024 In partnership with the NGO Renovatio, offer medical diagnosis and donation to residents who lost their glasses in the floods.

  1. REHABILITATION OF A HEALTH UNIT IN ELDORADO DO SUL (RS) - July to September/2024 So that the municipality can gradually resume the reception of patients and its role as the local health manager, we intend to enable the renovation of an ESF - Family Health Strategy (while our Mobile Unit is serving in the city).

EXPECTED RESULTS

  1. SHORT TERM
  • Expand the offer of clinical and specialized health services in the municipalities encompassed by the Taquari Valley and in the municipality of Eldorado do Sul.
  • Creation of a new reference point in basic health for the population affected by the floods.
  • Provide conditions for the resumption of treatments for chronic patients.
  • Offer treatment to residents affected by diseases resulting from contact with water, mud, crowding, and cold, such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis, hepatitis, H1N1, dengue.
  • Reduce the ophthalmological care queue and, above all, the demand for prescription glasses.
  1. MEDIUM TERM
  • Reestablishment of the local public health system.
  • Control of chronic diseases.
